Success Story

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes with Animated Videos

in partnership with Rewire Health and the CDC

The National Diabetes Prevention Program had a problem: only 0.5% of the 96 million adults with prediabetes in the US, had been reached with their prevention curriculum. In an effort to get the materials in front of at risk communities, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funded a type 2 diabetes prevention program with Rewire Health and the ADCES.

The URL dr adapted CDC materials into an animated video series to help prevent type 2 diabetes. The videos were loaded into offline video devices. The devices eliminated technology and internet access barriers, reaching at risk populations easily.

The results were nothing short of amazing. The URL dr’s animated video series positively impacted those at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. We’re not just training employees, we’re saving lives. Read more below.

How We Helped

The Problem

Complexity and cost of technology remain barriers to engagement and retention in diabetes prevention programs according to the National Diabetes Prevention Program and the CDC.

Those with the highest risk of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes are individuals over 65 years of age and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. These target populations struggle with technology and do not always have access to the internet.

Rewire Health founder Mark Oswald developed a deployment program for video materials using a handheld video booklet device with a 7″ LCD screen. The content was loaded into the device, eliminating the need for an internet connection, computer, or smart phone. He just needed the videos…

Our Solution

The URL dr was brought in to produce engaging animated videos with stories and scenarios that spoke to the targeted audience.

The animated video series was developed from guidelines published by the CDC. Modules were developed in both English and Spanish with culturally appropriate stories, dialogue, and animated scenes.

Incorporating animated video into the diabetes prevention program reduced the complexity of the curriculum and lowered the cost of technology barriers, while increasing engagement in hard-to-reach populations. The video devices were mailed to participants, which allowed participants to view the video series on demand without an internet connection.

The Results

Participant feedback was compiled to gauge the success of the type 2 diabetes prevention program animations and the video devices. Over 90% of participants had a favorable impression of the animated videos. The content was described as “engaging and the characters and content was found to be likeable and relatable.”

The videos were found to be effective at increasing awareness of the key topics and the questions they inspired led to increased engagement and discussion in live coaching sessions.

Positive changes in behavioral outcomes were also correlated with the use of the video devices. The animations reminded participants to review action plans each week and promoted engagement in meaningful and personal ways. An increase in self-directed behavioral change was noted by facilitators.
